In Faribault, community partnership is transforming the way families experience the start of each school year. As the cost of school supplies continues to rise—averaging nearly $90 per student—many families face real financial strain trying to gather everything on their child’s supply list. With 69% of Faribault Public Schools students qualifying as low-income, this annual expense can pose a significant barrier.
That’s why the Community Action Center, Supply Our Children, and the Faribault Area Chamber of Commerce joined forces with Faribault Public Schools to launch a simple but powerful solution: School Supplies for All. Now in its second year, this initiative removes the burden of supply shopping entirely for families of students in preschool through 8th grade. Instead of long lists and out-of-pocket costs, every child walked into a fully stocked classroom on the first day of school—ready to learn, belong, and thrive.
This project showcases what community education is all about: breaking down barriers, centering equity, and ensuring every student has what they need to succeed. Faribault’s collaborative model is not only meeting a pressing local need; it’s setting a powerful example for districts across Minnesota.
Congratulations to Faribault Public Schools and their community partners for being recognized with the 2025 Outstanding Community Education Project Award. Their commitment to children, families, and equitable access shines as a true testament to what’s possible when a community comes together.
