For the past three summers, Richfield Public Schools Community Education has brought the magic of theater to life through its Bounce! Summer Theater Camp—a fast-paced, high-energy program that makes a big impact in just one week.
With only five rehearsal days (Monday–Friday), students dive right into their roles from day one. Each participant receives a script, a role, and the chance to shine on stage in a final community performance held on Friday evening or Saturday morning. With the rights to the play secured in advance—including music and staging—students spend three hours a day rehearsing, singing, and learning the art of theater.
At the heart of the program is Mr. Edwards, Richfield’s High School Work-Based Learning and Fine Arts Coordinator, whose leadership and passion keep the camp thriving. Three years ago, when the district’s original theater camp had to unexpectedly close just a week before launch, Mr. Edwards stepped in to ensure students wouldn’t miss out on this opportunity. Since then, his dedication, mentorship, and ability to build lasting relationships with students and families have made the camp a community favorite.
This year, 58 students participated—29 in the morning session and 29 in the afternoon. The camp is supported by two program assistants, three student volunteers (alumni of the theater program), and occasional help from a volunteer choreographer. The result is a collaborative experience where friendships blossom, confidence soars, and students proudly showcase their talents to family, friends, and neighbors.
The impact goes beyond the stage. As one parent shared:
“My child loved it.”
“My child made a new friend.”
“We’d love to see more theater programs offered in the summer.”
The camp’s performances, open to the community with tickets available at the door, not only highlight the students’ hard work but also bring families and neighbors into the schools to celebrate creativity and connection.
The joy on the faces of students at the curtain call says it all—Bounce! Summer Theater Camp is a shining example of how Community Education transforms lives through learning, laughter, and lasting memories
